How to Get Over Your Fear of Failing at a New Job- The Muse
How to Get Over Your Fear of Failing at a New Job- The MuseHow to Get Over Your Fear of Failing at a New JobWalking into a new job can be scarier than a creepy clown with a sack full of spiders. You dont know who to talk to. You dont know whos got your back or whos gunning for you. You dont know the way things are normally done. And you dont know how- or if- things will work out.Its this uncertainty that makes you second-guess what youre doing and doubt whether youre good enough to do a fantastic job. So yes, the fear of failing in a new job is real. Fortunately, though, its eminently fixable. Heres how.Remember Why They Hired YouYou went through the interview process (which likely wasnt a cake walk), and you landed the job. But now that youve got the job and youre faced with the reality of doing it, its easy to forget why you got the job. So let me remind you.You were hired because youre the best. Your skills, your experience, your strengths, your talents, and your character make you the very best person to nail this. The proof is still very much in the pudding, of course, but the fact that your new employer selected you as the best person for the job counts for something. It means youre as good as you sometimes hope you are and better than you sometimes think you are.Get Out of the NarrativeIm going to screw this up. I cant figure this out. Im bedrngnis up to it. Everyones going to see me fail. Its only a matter of time before this blows up in my face.Just a handful of the thoughts that might whiz through your mind when you find yourself in a new job. Other thoughts you might have include I really like peas. Shoes are nifty. The sunshine feels great on my face. Im looking forward to Saturday. Mmm, coffee. My somewhat facetious point is that your brain will manufacture thoughts all day long. Thats its job. These thoughts and narratives are just thought events, and no more represent your truth than the thought I really like peas makes you a jolly green giant. When you gently notice the thoughts you have about failing or screwing up, you have the opportunity to see them as just thoughts, not reality. And that gives you the opportunity to say Oh hey, its you, thanks for stopping by. You know what, though? Im capable of so much more, and Im going to be just fine. (Want to explore this idea a bit further? Heres a three-step process to adjust your mindset in any situation.)Engage, Dont ResistFear of failure drives you to do two things. First, it makes you want to increase your odds of not screwing up. So you work to ensure that what you deliver will be what people expect. You work to ensure the right boxes are ticked. And you work to ensure your own safety as a priority.Second, it makes you hold back- even just a little bit- so that if things do go pear-shaped you can justify it to yourself and devolve yourself of responsibility. So you dont voice your opinion in case it gets you noticed. You resist going all in, because its safer to keep things a t arms length. And you build walls so you know just how far you can safely go.These things, by the way, are exactly what stifles creativity and innovation, turns work into struggle, and prevents you from doing truly great work. Youre more likely to fail by resisting than you are by engaging.Know Failure Is Not the EnemyLets get down to brass tacks. Theres no way of knowing how things will turn out ahead of time, and its entirely possible that you might screw up and experience failure. So what? Youve screwed up before, and youre still here. Youve failed before, and you learned from it. Youve been there when the brown stuff hit the fan, and you got through it.Failure is just something that happens from time to time, like a rain shower, indigestion, or a Netflix binge. Its no more an indicator of how good you are, how capable you are, or how valuable you are than a hole in your sock is an indicator that you cant be trusted to wear clothes. So perhaps failure isnt what you should be fear ing after all. In fact, even scarier is not being willing to fail in the first place.Reading this before you start a new position? Heres a free checklist of everything to do the night before your first day.

How to Investigate Cold Cases as a Career
How to Investigate Cold Cases as a CareerHow to Investigate Cold Cases as a CareerNo matter how good police detectives may be, cases are going to come along which just cant be solved. At least, that is to say, not right away. Once investigators have exhausted all available leads, the trail, as they say, goes cold. And so too does the case. Lack of evidence, lack of witnesses and lack of technology are just some of the factors that can converge to make a case difficult, if not impossible, to solve within a reasonably quick timeframe. Criminal cases arent classified as closed unless and until there are a final determination and finding. That means evidence and testimony have generated probable cause to identify a responsible party for the incident in question (accidents and suicides included). Unsolved cases, then, remain open but inactive. That means that, while investigators havent drawn a successful conclusion, theyve since stopped actively working the file. These so-called cold cas es remain open and inactive indefinitely unless new information or evidence surfaces that warrants taking a second look. And thats where the job of a cold case investigator comes in. How Cold Case Investigations Work The International Association of Cold Case Investigators defines a cold case as any criminal investigation in which all known leads have been investigated, and evidence is being re-examined to determine if a further scientific analysis is necessary. There are a few ways that a cold case may be reactivated, but in general, they involve the revelation of some new fact that compels further investigation. In some few instances, police departments have an investigator assigned to review cold cases. In even rarer circumstances, agencies have an entire squad or unit dedicated to cold files. In these instances, the investigators may initiate periodic reviews of cases to see if anything may have been overlooked or if any new information might be available. If so, theyll purs ue those new leads and see where they take them in hopes of bringing some resolution. The majority of cases, though, are reactivated because some outside source brought new information to light. For example, a previously unknown witness may surface with crucial information. Or, as in one New York City rape case, DNA evidence from a cold case appeared as a match to other evidence gathered in a new case, linking the two and providing valuable new leads. If a department doesnt have a dedicated cold case investigator or unit, an investigatoris assigned to go after the new leads and work it as he or she would work a fresh case. Theyll review the old files and interviews and, if necessary, conduct new interviews in light of the new information. Where Cold Case Investigators Work According to a 2011 study by the RAND Corporation, only 20 percent of law enforcement agencies in the United States have a protocol in distributionspolitik for initiating cold case investigations. Only 10 perc ent have a full-time investigator assigned to cold cases, and only seven percent have a dedicated cold case unit. These departments are typically larger metropolitan police or sheriffs departments, such as the NYPD or LAPD, and federal or state investigative bureaus like the FBI or Texas Rangers. Smaller agencies may sometimes hire retired or former detectives on a part-time basis to handle cold cases as the need arises. How Much Cold Case Investigators Earn and How You CanBecome One Cold case investigators are criminal investigators they have essentially the same working responsibilities and rank as other detectives or investigators. In the United States, the average salary for full-time investigators is around $60,000 per year, but that figure can vary greatly depending on years of service and location. To become a cold case investigator, you must first become a police officer or special agent. Like any other specialty position or unit within law enforcement, after you have en ough seniority, you may become eligible to become a criminal investigator and possibly be assigned to a cold case unit.

How to Craft a Payroll Resume That Will Stand Out
How to Craft a Payroll Resume That Will Stand OutHow to Craft a Payroll Resume That Will Stand OutWhen applying for your dream payroll job, how do you make sure youre among the fruchtwein promising candidates? Simple Make the job easy for the person reviewing your payroll resume.Managers want to hire skilled professionals, but they dont love the vetting process. Thats because sifting through applications can be tedious and time-consuming. Executives look at an average of 40 resumes per job opening and spend 12 minutes on each one, according to a recent survey. Here are five ways to give them an easy time choosing you and your payroll resume.1. You against the machine Use the right keywordsManagers seldom are the first ones to read job applications anymore. That goes for payroll jobs, too. When you submit your information, it often goes directly into an applicant tracking system (ATS), which scans your documents for predetermined keywords. For example, if SAP experience is a required q ualification, the recruiter will search for SAP. A resume without that keyword wont see the light of day - not matter how long youve been a super nutzer of this enterprise resource planning software. To get past the ATS gatekeeper, youve got to use language a machine understands. Make sure your payroll resume contains the right keywords. Scrutinize the job posting to figure out what terms a hiring manager (and therefore the ATS) is likely to search for. (Hint Keywords are often the phrases listed under both major responsibilities and required skills.) Then use them naturally. Modern ATSs, not to mention the human who will eventually see your application, can detect keyword stuffing.Search for payroll jobs in your city and subscribe to job alerts.2. Tailor the resume to the jobAfter the hiring manager found you by searching for certain keywords, you need to convince them you have the entire package - experience, skills and credentials - they seek. Submitting a generic resume isnt m aking the managers job easy. Its likely to lead the recruiter to skip over it and go on to the next candidate.Instead, figure out what the employer wants to see and make it easy for them to see it. A summary statement is a good place to speak directly to the manager. These few sentences should highlight your most relevant and impressive skills and accomplishments. Use active verbs and stay away from buzzwords. Focus on the qualifications the job posting emphasizes. It goes without saying that you should submit a slightly different resume for each payroll job you apply for.3. Highlight your core payroll skillsWhen an employer picks up your resume, the first thing they look for is your direct payroll experience, such asPayroll systems (Sage, ADP, Lawson, Kronos, Paycom and so on)Credentials like the CPP (Certified Payroll Professional)Multistate and/or Canadian payrollRecent coursework in taxation and regulatory complianceMany payroll jobs are blended with other related roles, especia lly in smaller businesses. When applying for one of these hybrid positions, be sure to mention your skills in benefits administration, onboarding/training, administrative support or accounting. Take advantage of the cover letter to draw attention to key aspects of your payroll resume, such as a payroll certification, and play up the breadth and depth of your industry knowledge.4. Show off your technical abilitiesPayroll is relying more and more on cloud-based platforms, not only for payroll processing but also for financial reporting and generating operational data. As such, tech skills can really make a payroll resume stand out. So if youve got them, flaunt them. Mention your proficiencies, especially with Microsoft Excel. List all the payroll, accounting and HRIS (human resources information system) software you know. Whats more, tell prospective employers you enjoy working with technology and are eager to learn new systems.5. Demonstrate your soft skillsWhile its true that todays payroll jobs are highly technical, much of what a payroll specialist does still relates to people and personality traits. There are new employees to process and possibly onboard. When an employees paycheck has an error, its up to payroll to troubleshoot and resolve that issue. You also have to be able to work well with colleagues within and outside of payroll. All of that requires self-initiative, creative thinking, and excellent written and verbal communication skills. Bilingual abilities are a bonus. Make sure all this comes across in your resume.Dont just list your interpersonal skills tell how youve used them. For example, describe a time a non-finance colleague complimented you on how understandable a presentation you gave was because you tailored it to your audience and didnt fill it with payroll-specific terms others wouldnt know. Or, if you speak a second language, give anecdotes about how you were able to help an employee your coworkers couldnt.Your payroll resume is a sal es brochure with one purpose to convince prospective employers to contact you for an interview. So make it easy by speaking directly to them and their needs.
